Triconex TMR technology improves safety and efficiency at Brazilian refinery
(On March 30, 2006, Petrobras selected Triconex TMR (Triple Modular Redundant) technology from Invensys Process
Systems for safety instrumented systems (SIS) applications in two major refineries in Brazil.)
The technology will be implemented at the Duque de Caxias refinery (REDUC) in Rio de Janeiro and the Paulinia
refinery (REPLAN) in São Paulo, both among the largest in the Petrobras system. Multiple Tricon safety systems
will be installed in their cracking units.
➪Emergency Shutdown Systems and Simplified Maintenance
The new emergency shutdown systems are part of a refinery modernization program, replacing existing relay panels.
These systems were selected to simplify maintenance, increase asset availability, and improve safety and efficiency.
➪Comprehensive Service Support
Invensys Process Systems Brazil will provide a wide range of services, including configuration, testing, commissioning,
start-up, and training. For the Paulinia refinery, Invensys is also providing all basic and detailed engineering services
throughout the safety systems project.
➪Advantages of Triconex TMR Technology
Triconex TMR technology employs three isolated, parallel control systems with extensive diagnostics integrated into
one system. It uses two-out-of-three voting to ensure high-integrity, error-free, uninterrupted process operation. The
TMR architecture eliminates single points of failure and enables online maintenance, programming downloads, self-
calibration, and fault localization.
Through this project, Triconex TMR technology will provide safe and reliable process operations for the two major
Brazilian refineries, while improving maintenance efficiency and productivity.
